We know dealing with HVAC systems can be a daunting task and sometimes downright confusing. No matter what type of home you have and what your heating and cooling needs are, it is important you keep your HVAC system running efficiently so your family can stay comfy and cozy all year long. We compiled a list of the Top 5 questions our technicians hear most while out talking to customers in hopes that it helps you feel like you have enough knowledge to make good decisions when it comes to your systems.

1. Does a Larger HVAC System Offer Better Performance?

No! Today, energy efficiency is the name of the game. Many believe that bigger is always going to be better which leads to people wanting to install the largest available HVAC equipment on the market today. However, if you purchase a system that is too large, the system will heat or cool your home faster than an adequately sized system. On the other hand, it will operate in short cycles, causing the system to start and stop more frequently and resulting in a higher energy bill. If you go too small, your system will run continuously, trying to attain your desired temperature, which again results in a higher energy bill. The best- sized HVAC system for your home is based on your house’s square footage so that it can heat and cool your home without overworking your system.

2. How Often Should I Change My Filters?

Some change their filters at the start of each season, while others replace every month. We suggest changing them when filters are dirty. The frequency will depend on a number of factors including the type of air filter, home air quality, if there are pets in the home, number of people in your family and the level of outdoor pollutants. Another consideration is how hard or how often your HVAC equipment is used. Want to know more about air filters? Check out our blog on your Top 5 Air Filter Questions.

3. How Can I Increase the Efficiency and Life of my HVAC System?

Besides changing your air filter regularly, another great way to increase energy efficiency is by adjusting your thermostat to a temperature closer to outdoor temperatures when you are not home. You may also want to purchase a programmable thermostat and use it correctly. Instead of trying to remember everyday to change your thermostat’s settings, programmable thermostats allow you to set automatic temperature changes based on your schedule. Just remember to up update and adjust when necessary.

4. How Do I Choose the Right HVAC System?

A new HVAC system represents a significant monetary expense, but it also represents a long-term investment in energy efficiency and indoor comfort. Choosing the right system for you and your family can be overwhelming, requiring knowledge of equipment function, efficiency standards and your own individual heating and cooling needs. You’ll want to consider where you live, what kind of fuel is available in your area or appropriate for your home, how much you want to spend, etc. A qualified HVAC technician can help determine the right system for your home.

5. How Do I Know Whether to Repair or Replace my Heating or Cooling Equipment?

There are many factors to consider, such as the age of your current system, if it is providing the level of comfort you want, the cost of repairs and how many more repairs it will need in the future. Keep in mind that any system that is more than 10 years old is also probably behind the times in terms of efficiency. A technician can work with you to prepare a side-by-side cost-benefit analysis to help you compare whether it is more advantageous for you to keep your current system or replace with a newer one.
