Resource Library / 20 Ways to Lower Your Energy Bill This Winter
- Have your furnace professionally cleaned and tuned-up for maximum efficiency.
- Make sure all your filters are clean.
- Ensure that the blower wheel is clean.
- Move all furniture, rugs, etc., away from all registers and vents.
- Close all registers and vents in unused rooms and close the doors. A rolled towel at the bottom of the door will block drafts.
- Install, program and use a programmable thermostat to prevent heating your home when you are gone.
- Stop tampering with your thermostat settings. Install a whole home humidifier. You'll feel warmer at a lower thermostat setting.
- If your furnace is more than 10 years old, contact us about an energy analysis to see what kind of savings you could be receiving with more efficient equipment.
- Stop heating garages and porches, but make sure they are winterized to prevent problems.
- Don't use a fireplace to heat your home. They pull more heat out of the home than they put back in.
- Make sure fireplace dampers are closed tightly when not in use.
- Install glass doors on your fireplace to stop heat from escaping up the chimney when it's not in use.
- Install flow restrictor heads on your showers and limit shower times.
- Repair all water leaks and dripping faucets ASAP.
- Run only full loads in your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer.
- Consider replacing your traditional hot water tank with an energy-efficient tankless water heater.
- Insulate all ductwork installed or running through unconditioned spaces (garages, attics, etc.).
- Seal all supply and return air ductwork with duct mastic sealant compound.
- Ensure gas-fired hot water heaters are flushed every four months.
- Install weather stripping around all doors and insulate where necessary.
