We’ve all experienced the irritating effects of hard water.

Scaly, spotted water faucets, white spots or film on your glassware, dull, dry or rough hair, and even soap that doesn’t lather well are all signs that you have hard water.

What many people don’t know is that hard water can cause problems with your plumbing as well. Some hard water problems may require plumbing repair.

Hard water is water that contains high amounts of dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. These mineral deposits can build up in your plumbing over time causing clogged pipes and putting additional strain on your water heater.

The hardness of your water is determined by the minerals in the ground where you live, so avoiding the negative effects of hard water on your plumbing can be difficult. You can determine the hardness of your water by having it tested or calling your water company since your water will likely have the same hardness.

If you determine that you have hard water, the best solution is to soften it with a quality water softener. A water softener will remove a bulk of the calcium and magnesium in hard water and solve your hard water problems.

If you are an experienced do-it-yourselfer, you may be able to purchase and install a water softener on your own.

However, many plumbing companies can assist with installation and diagnose and repair potential or existing plumbing problems at the same time.
