One Moment Can Change Everything . . .
Akron, OH, November 22, 2010 – Most of us can think of that “one moment” that forever altered our lives in some way. That “one moment” happened for 22-year-old Quaid McIver of Akron, Ohio in July of 2010, when working as an automotive detailer at Lexus of Akron-Canton. An unoccupied SUV he had been working on accelerated and pinned Quaid against the wall, causing him to lose both of his legs above the knee, forever changing his life.
Following his surgery, Quaid returned to his mom’s home where he had been living previously. Due to his changed situation, however, his mom’s house needed to be made more handicap accessible. In order to do this, they decided to add a new addition to the home, which would allow Quaid to get around easier in his wheelchair.
Weeks after this incident occurred and following a newspaper article in the Akron Beacon Journal about Quaid (Cardwell, Jewel. “Accident victim offers thanks.” Akron Beacon Journal 15 Aug. 2010), Paul Cantrell, an employee of Blind & Sons (a local heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical company) had another “moment”. After reading about Quaid’s story he was struck by three things: one, the young man graduated from the same Akron Public School District Paul did; two, the Lexus dealer was a customer of Blind & Sons; and three, in the article Famous Supply, a heating, cooling & plumbing supplier to Blind & Sons was donating product to help make a handicap accessible bathroom for Quaid and asking a contractor to volunteer to do the installation work.
Cantrell’s “one moment” has lead to a tremendous outreach from Blind & Sons, as well as several of their suppliers. Blind & Sons “stepped up” to the challenge and is providing all of the contractor work – heating, cooling, plumbing & electrical, for the home and new addition.
On November 17, 2010 Blind & Sons installed a new heating and cooling system. The McIver family had been without heat for over two weeks. Both Blind & Sons and Ferguson Heating & Cooling donated the furnace and air conditioner.
Moen is donating all of the faucets, Kohler is donating a toilet and kitchen sink and Apex Supply is donating all of the electrical supplies.
The goal is to have their home renovations done by Christmas of this year. Bill Blind, President of Blind & Sons, says, “After reading the article in the Akron Beacon Journal my heart went out to this family. Their story has touched all of us at Blind & Sons. We saw a wonderful opportunity to help out one of our neighbors by doing exactly what we’re trained for.”
It’s great to see folks coming forward and helping out a neighbor in need. This “one moment” of despair is turning into a “moment of hope” for the McIver family this holiday season.
Donations can be given at any US Bank Branch through the Quaid McIver Bereavement Fund.
