Why is My Air Filter Wet?

If you go to replace your air filter and find that it is wet, you may be wondering what is going on. This is a common issue, but it does indicate a problem. At Blind & Sons, we want you to know what to do to protect your furnace from all potential problems, so here is a closer look at what a wet furnace filter could mean.

Common Causes of a Wet Air Filter

First, if you notice that your furnace’s air filter is wet, make sure you replace it immediately. A wet filter is a perfect place for mold and mildew growth, and you want to address this before it becomes a problem. However, you also need to find the cause.

Your HVAC air filter is part of both the cooling and heating systems. Wetness is more common when running the AC because the air conditioning system creates condensation that can get caught in the lines. Here are three reasons you might experience a wet air filter.

1. Frozen Evaporator Coil

If the furnace is wet during the cooling season and you’re noticing water around the indoor air conditioning unit, combined with warm air from the vents, you may have a frozen evaporator coil. This often happens when refrigerant levels get low, or there is a clog somewhere along the line. Check the lines outside to see if there is any ice buildup. If there is, call for a service check.

2. Clogged Condensate Drain

When you run the AC, condensation naturally occurs. The condensate drain allows that to flow out of the system and out of your home. If you have a clog in the condensate drain, then the water will get stuck in the system and make your air filter wet.

Try to suck out any clogs from the condensate drain using a shop vac if you suspect this problem. If that does not work, you will need a technician to reach the clog using specialized tools. Do not try to use a snake on the condensate drain, as you may damage it.

3. Leaking Drain Pan

If the drain pan in the condensation system is leaking, it can allow moisture to get to the air filter. This problem can occur as the system gets older and the drain pan develops a crack or rust. Replacing the drain pan will resolve this issue.

Get Professional Help for Your Wet Air Filter

Some of these problems you can fix on your own, but sometimes you will need professional help to get to the root of the issue. If you don’t find an obvious problem with your drain pan, condensate drain, or evaporator coil, or if you don’t feel confident repairing these issues, get professional help.
