There are few things more frustrating during the winter than a furnace that won’t turn on or stops working. A certain amount of fear and questions come along with a malfunctioning furnace, as well. Questions like:

• How much is this going to cost me?

• How long will my family have to go without heat?

• Can I fix this myself?

• What could I have done to keep this from happening?

• Again, how much is this going to cost me?

The good news is that many times there are things you can do on your own to get your furnace to run again. And yes, there are a few things you can do to prevent your furnace from breaking down on you in the middle of winter.

As far as the time and cost are concerned, most reputable heating or air conditioning companies offer reasonable estimates and additional discounts to maintenance plans holders. And your heating or cooling company should strive to take care of you the same day you call.

If your furnace still won’t work after trying the following fixes, and you are lucky enough to call Ohio your home, give us a call. We would be honored to help.

3 Things You Can Try:

Check Your Thermostat Setting. You would be surprised how often people don’t set their thermostats correctly. Make sure that it is set to ‘on,’ otherwise, it will continue to sit there quietly. Also, check that the temperature on your thermostat is set to several degrees higher than the temperature of the room.

Check Your Filter. Sometimes a clogged air filter will cause your furnace to overheat, and your system will shut down to prevent a fire hazard. Turn your system off. Replace or clean your air filter and wait a few hours before turning your system back on.

Check Your Furnace Switch. Yes, your furnace has a switch called the ‘furnace switch’ that powers your system. If the switch has somehow been turned to the ‘off’ position or if it has gone bad, your system will not run.

If you find your furnace is still not working, give Blind & Sons a call.
